Ensure that the Disability Right law is enforced In Educational Institutions

Did you know that there are 27 million persons living with disabilities in Nigeria and they currently go through different life challenges that degenerate further because schools, public transportation,  public, and private buildings do not provide services that accommodate their disabilities conveniently?

People living with disabilities are discriminated against because they are not considered when facilities are constructed, and social buffers are not created for them to live wholesome lives. The sad implication of this situation is that persons with disabilities are forced to stay in their homes, away from the public and children with disabilities cannot go to school, play in public recreation parks and integrate with other children.

On January 23, Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari signed into law the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Bill, 2018,  following 9 years of relentless advocacy by disability rights groups and activists.

We have an obligation to speak against these discriminations and to support the enforcement of this law. We believe that the enactment of this law is a step forward in achieving fair and just treatments for persons with disabilities. Now, the responsibility is ours to ensure the enforcement of this law.
