Benue a prestigious state in Nigeria is one which cannot be pushed aside when speaking about the giant of Africa. It boasts of close to 80,000 to 500,0000 indigenes whose primary occupation is farming. No wonder that when talking about food production, this endowed state is held in high esteem.
Many folks see Benue state as one whose endowment beckons on investors to plough in their resources so as to get rich ripen produce from this rich lands. This state is favored with three gigantic cities-Makurdi, Gboko and Otukpo.
In terms of infrastructure, this state holds a major bridge linking the Eastern, Northern and North-Eastern state together, making it a hub for food and other economic growth to play its beats there.
The Markudi airport is known to be the biggest Agricultural cargo airport in Nigeria.
You might say- why then is this State not as widely known as other power-houses state in Nigeria, as it brings a whole lot to the table?
This state is plagued with insecurity issues as seen in recent times, making it a no go area for investors.
In recent times, Nigerians decry the recent killings from bandits under the coverings of herdsmen. These ones perpetuate evil- destroying farmlands, ranches and even killing citizens of the state, in the name of religion and other “bruhaha”.
Recently, the said Governor Samuel Ortom rejected the bill of open grazing, calling that it will do more harm than good to the citizens and other activities in the state.
Gory images and unpalatable news from social media platforms such a twitter and others show how on a daily basis humans are been slaughtered as if they are animals that are to be sold in a bush market.
In a span of two weeks, intelligence has it that over 200 people have been killed by the bandits. One will ask: will this killings ever end in this blessed community of Benue State?
Governor Ortom Samuel times without number has called on the federal government come to the rescue as the menace is increasingly overwhelming the security agencies in the state.
Mr Ortom has also urged the people to defend themselves against killer herders.
“I’ll no longer announce the deaths of those killed by Fulani herdsmen; rise up and defend yourselves with weapons not prohibited by law, bows and arrows, spears, knives, and similar ones,” speaks Mr Ortom.
The federal government, instead of coming to the plea and cries of the many in Benue state, took to the platform and presented the rehabilitation of grazing reserves.
One would be started to ask: Are Human lives really precious to this present government?
