Conflicts in a Modern World
The level of conflict and conflagration on a global scale has reached an unprecedented level in modern times. Internal situations are rapidly getting out of control , and the Third world seems to be the worst bearer of this inexorable situation. The fight over resources , ideological differences , incessant dissatisfaction due to marginalization has plunged many parts of the third world into cesspools of civil unrest and violent agitations. International organizations are also becoming overburdened with various and countless numbers of reports on these state of things. The Syrian conflict, though recently concluded, created one of the worst refugee crises since the Second World War , leaving almost half of the country destitute as they were forced to leave their ancestral homelands to neighbouring countries, creating a humanitarian crisis of astronomical proportions. The Rohingya ethnic crisis in Myanmar has also left thousands of people homeless , and the neighbouring country of Bangladesh is under extreme pressure on how to handle the enormous influx of refugees from Myanmar. In West Africa , the rise of Boko Haram/ISWAP and the incessant killings of people by these extremists has made the situation of insurgency a matter that concerns other neighbouring countries apart from Nigeria where it originated from. The present agitation for the dissolution of the political entity known as Nigeria by separatist groups is also a clear indication that a political and social disaster looms.
In view of these situations, one would clearly understand that inequality in the flow of economic resources and poor , corrupt and blatant incompetence in leadership contribute largely to the problems of many Third World countries, and these factors lead to conflicts. The oppression of minorities by the government is a situation that predated the sufferings of the Jews under the dictatorial Nazi regime of the Third Reich and it is unfortunately still a prevalent in many developing countries today. As controversial as the Marxist theory is in many quarters , the concept that lays emphasis on the importance of economic resources as the base of a vibrant political system is still relevant today , so inequality in creating access to basic economic needs creates a fertile ground for the germination of conflicts due to discontent.
It is the duty of political leadership to understand that entities cannot be governed peacefully if the security and economic needs of the citizenry are not met. A holistic, all encompassing and multi dimensional approach should be created and embraced by the leadership of these systems to engender a more peaceful global system, as the international system has been likened to a human system, where the function of an organ is not independent of the other.
